Close allies of Hades, the Sirens are creatures from Greek mythology who lure sailors to certain death with their song. Enchanted by the sad, sweet voices of the Sirens, captains sail their ships into stormy waters and into rocky, unsafe shores, sealing their doom. They are companions and servants to Persephone, and have been known to secure the death of souls Hades has his eye on, as well as enact the occasionally vicious will of his queen.
Rory's grandmother is one of the Sirens. Enamored with a sea-faring mortal, she shared with him a single human lifetime, bearing him a son. When her lover died, she abandoned her family and never again spoke to her now grown human son. As a result, while Rory is aware of his heritage, he doesn't truly understand what it means. He knows only that, despite being a popular kid and a gifted lacrosse player, he can't shake his deep-seated love of music, mostly blues and country. He doesn't understand that his weekly performances at Road to Ruin's open mic night do more than entertain: his voice is an instrument of his will, compelling his audience to feel what he wants them to feel, to see what he wants them to see...and in some cases, do exactly what he wants them to do. Sometimes even the world itself listens (as one particularly rousing cover of The Who's "Love Reign O'er Me" proved, when his song caused a thunderstorm in the middle of the summer, on one of the dryest, hottest days of the year).
He doesn't realize that, no matter how human he might be, at his core he is still a Siren.
